A time of uncertainty transformed Jen Buck's work into something uniquely hers

If Jen Buck’s photos feel personal, there’s a reason for it: She shoots for no other purpose than to satisfy her vision. While a lot of photographers are driven by the need to please clients, collect followers, or get assignments, Buck doesn’t have a website, doesn’t seek work, and only sells prints occasionally. She creates photos for the pure love of it—and to see in the landscape what she feels inside.

Buck grew up on the East Coast, moved to Durango, Colorado, made her way to the San Juan Mountains, and fell for the grandeur of Galen Rowell’s alpine photography. Her early work, shot on slide film, was inspired by him, but it didn’t satisfy her, and she set photography aside for a few years. It wasn’t until her husband got sick that she picked up the camera again in a serious way.
