Photos by Chris Burkard

Chris Burkard isn’t one to settle. At age 19, he gave up a steady job to pursue his dream of becoming a professional surf photographer. Within a few years, he was terrifically successful, landing a plum role as a contributor to Surfer magazine and winning the prestigious Red Bull Illume photography contest. But shooting in board shorts in equatorial waters grew easy, comfortable. So he changed it up once again, turning his back on palm-lined beaches, and devoted himself to cold water and rugged, windswept spots at the edge of the grid. That path led him beyond surfing, way beyond routine, and the results speak for themselves.
