Lost Dog

A joyous trail run with a canine companion goes far, far off track

The alarm went off at 4 a.m. on Father’s Day. My running pack was ready, clothes laid out, and coffee brewed. Food for the long day was carefully packaged and waiting in the fridge and my geeky gels and sardines were stuffed in the bottom of my pack, as they always are for alpine trips like these. It would be my first big run of the summer in Colorado’s Gore Range and the first one with my new running partner, Merle Right-Eye Hamburger.

After hitting the snooze button once, I remembered what lay in front of me—a full day where my doting family would accommodate my pursuit to the top of one of Colorado’s classic peaks and then add some pampering and love afterward. Five minutes later, Merle and I were out the door.
