More than a surf shop, Proof Lab in Mill Valley, California

If not in sight of a beach, most surf shops are at least within smelling distance of the ocean. There’s a tang of salt air in the parking lot and the gritty crunch of sand under your shoes at the front door, shaken from thousands of flip-flopping feet. Surfers tend to live near the beach, after all, and it strengthens a surf shop’s bottom line to be where its customers are.

Then there’s the beloved Proof Lab, a surf shop just north of San Francisco, in decidedly non-surfy Marin County, California. It’s six miles from the nearest beach and a half-hour’s drive to frankly terrible waves, over a winding mountain road, twisting through misty redwoods, thronged with Rapha-clad roadies and muddied mountain bikers descending the flanks of Mount Tamalpais.
