Cutting through the lush, green coastal forests of southern Oregon, the Rogue River runs from Crater Lake to the Pacific Ocean. The river alternates between lazy flat water and boulder-choked rapids. Black bear and trophy steelhead abound. Even the occasional seal will make its way upriver until it misses the salty water of the ocean and returns home.
For launch dates from May 15 to October 15, 2019, permits are issued via lottery to run the wild and scenic segment of the river. Applications are managed through Recreation.gov.
The lottery opens on December 1, 2018 and closes on January 31, 2019. Permit winners will be notified by February 14, 2019. To check on availability after February 14, contact the BLM office at 541.479.3735.
Permits are required year-round, even outside of the controlled dates. Off-season permits are self-issued at the Smullin Visitor Center and Grave Creek Boat Launch access.
