Only the designated wild section of the main Salmon River requires a permit, from Corn Creek to Long Tom Bar. Even in lower water years, this a high-volume stretch with wicked fun wave trains and sandy beaches that look like they belong near a tropical island, not a mountain river.
All applications are handled through Recreation.gov, while the local Forest Service offices still manages the actual permits. The lottery controlled launch dates for 2019 are June 20 to September 7.
The lottery opens on December 1, 2018 and closes on January 31, 2019. Permit winners will be notified by February 14, 2019. Any remaining, available launch dates during the restricted window will be open on a first-come, first-served basis on the same day.
Permits are required year-round, even outside of the lottery protected dates. Available permit dates for off-season launches are posted on Recreation.gov on October 15. For more information, contact the North Fork Ranger District (208.865.2700).
