The Grand Canyon hogs most of the glory, but Hells Canyon is actually the deepest gorge in North America. It’s a remote place, rich with wildlife and steelhead, and with river depths over 100 feet in spots.
All applications to run the river during the controlled launch dates are handled through Recreation.gov. For 2019, those dates are May 24 to September 10.
The lottery opens on December 1, 2018 and closes on January 31, 2019. Permit winners will be notified by February 14, 2019. If any dates remain unconfirmed by original lottery winners as of March 16, 2019, they will be opened to others on a first-come, first-served basis.
Permits are required year-round, even outside of the lottery protected dates. For more information, contact the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest office (541.523.6391).
