If we close our eyes and picture a surf lineup in the US, most of us are probably seeing the same thing: a bunch of white dudes. There’s a growing movement to mix that reality up with more women, more people of color, and more LGBTQ folks. Inherent in this mission is the recognition that socioeconomics and body shape have also presented some socially imposed hurdles to catching a wave.
The Diversity in Surf panel will include Rhonda Harper, founder of Black Girls Surf; Manav Thapar, entrepreneur and sports psychologist; Kyla Langan, founder of Queer Surf; and Natasha Brown, surf instructor. Joyce Hu, founder of Marlin Ray, will moderate.
Proceeds from the ticket sales will go to City Surf Project, a San Francisco-based nonprofit that connects underrepresented youth to the ocean.
Bonus: The event will be held at one of the hands down, coolest surf shops around, Traveler, at Linda Mar Beach.
