The name of this award lays it out. The Cutting Edge Grant is for expeditions to the unknown: unexplored mountain ranges, dizzying first ascents, and other ventures with the dial ramped on difficulty. Because of the nature of this award, applicants are expected to already be at the top of their skill and experience game. Athletes who are already sponsored are welcome to apply, as are under-the-radar trip leaders who know their stuff.
In 2018, the American Alpine Club and primary sponsor Global Rescue awarded a total of $20,000, divided among four recipients, for the Cutting Edge Grant. In 2017, there were three recipients. Expeditions included exploring previously banned peaks in the Pakistani Karakoram and an all-female fast and light ascent of an unclimbed route on Arjuna’s West Face in the Zanskar-Kashmir-Kishtwar region of Himal India.
Specific details for applying are on the website. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, members of the American Alpine Club, and plan to complete their proposed expedition in 2019. Applications are due by the end of day on November 30, 2018.
