Cyclist in Alaska Fights Off 500-Pound Bear After it Bit Him

A cyclist successfully fended off a big brown bear after it charged and bit him near Cantwell, Alaska, last week. The man was on his bike when he first spotted the bear about 15 yards away, already running full speed toward him. Trying to ward off the bear, he jumped off his bike, yelled, and waved his arms to appear larger.

The bear kept coming, the man fell to the ground, kicking at the bear. After biting the man on the leg, the two continued scuffling before the bear ran off into the bushes. The cyclist was able to gather himself and call a friend who picked him up and took him to the hospital. He was carrying a firearm, Alaska Wildlife Troopers said, but he did not discharge it during the mauling.
