Ever made one of these? They have lots of names, all with some variation of a Northern European or Russian place name, plus “torch.” It’s a great way to make a cooking fire if you have only one log, or a small campfire with the same restrictions. If the ground is wet or covered in snow, this also keeps the flame up off the moist soil. It burns slowly, and doesn’t require tending. As the embers burn, they slowly burn the logs down from the inside. With a nice, flat top, you can put cooking irons right on the flame too.
