Bike Thefts Are Way, Way Up

Bike thefts were up 24% in 2020, compared to 2019. This is according to the Bike Index, a non-profit bike registry. Of course, way more bikes were sold in 2020 than in 2019, so there are more bikes on the roads and trails, and locked up, or not locked up, outside cafes, stores, and houses. Lots of new riders who maybe aren’t as savvy as lifers who are only marginally better at keeping their bikes from being stolen.

Thieves are now getting bolder, with some in the Bay Area ambushing riders and stealing their bikes at gunpoint. Not much a lock can do to prevent that, but it at least shows that thieves know there are lots of expensive bikes out there, and a huge demand for bikes that the regular market can’t keep up with.

Point is, lock ’em up, make sure your insurance covers your bike, and good luck out there.
