Meet, and Save, Slim Pickins, A Very Cool Outdoor Shop
In downtown Stephenville, Texas, a small town smack in the middle of the state, there’s an old Recall Drugs storefront that, in 2017, became Slim Pickins, the nation’s first Black-owned outdoor gear shop. Outside, it’s Stephenville, but inside, it’s Stephenchill. At least, according to founders Jahmicah and Heather Dawes. Jahmicah pondered leaving the town, a traditional cowboy-centric Texas place, but decided to make his, and his family’s stand right there in Stephenville. A dedicated angler, Dawes wanted a shop that the Black community could feel comfortable walking into, maybe learning a new skill, a new way to be.
COVID-19 has decimated their business, however, they face closure, and they could use some help.
Together with The Outbound Collective, Slim Pickins put together a great short film about their shop, their community, and, whether they meant to or not, the film taps into that love we all have of our own gear shops.
The film is below, and if you feel so inclined, here is a link to their GoFundMe page.
