Japanese Town Employs Robot Wolves to Frighten Away Wild Bears

Takikawa, a town on Japan’s Hokkaido island had a little bear problem. Wild bears have been increasingly wandering into town, possibly because of a shortage of acorns in the surrounding forests. Or perhaps they just like the towns architecture.

Either way, locals are concerned about the frightening prospects of bear attacks, so they’ve decided to fight fire with fire, at least in terms of frightening animals.

They’ve erected animatronic robot wolves—monstrous ones at that.

There are some 70 of these around Japan.

“We want to let the bears know, ‘Human settlements aren’t where you live,’ and help with the co-existence of bears and people,” Yuji Ota, the head of Ohta Seiki, told The Mainichi newspaper.
