The Izembek is home to massive populations of migratory birds, including many endangered species. Brown bears prowl the grasses. Walrus groups loll about on the shore. It’s a pristine wilderness, but like much of the wilderness in Alaska, there have been plans to build roads through the middle of the ecosystem. A recent court ruling stopped the most immediate plans for a road, but in Alaska, it seems, the threat is always there.
