What a film. What a life. Jim Henterly is an illustrator and naturalist who spends summers as a lookout at Desolation Peak, in Washington. If that name and place sound familiar and you’ve never been, could be because of Jack Kerouac’s book Desolation Angels, part of which was based on Kerouac’s time in 1956 operating the same fire lookout as in this film. Henterly makes the case for sitting, observing, situating oneself in wilderness that we’ve all heard a million times before, but still we haven’t heard it enough.
