Jeff Maassen is a commercial urchin fisherman in Santa Barbara, California. Santa Barbara is the source of some of the world’s most sought-after urchins, collected for their roe, a delicacy in restaurants around the world. The harvesting process for Maassen requires diving and selectively plucking urchins from rocks. COVID-19 brought regular business to a halt, but also has re-opened age old avenues for selling directly to customers on the dock, and just might make the harvesting sustainable. Morgan Maassen, Jeff’s son, a talented filmmaker, made this lovely short.
