Baker County, Oregon, is a rural stretch of farmland in the eastern flank of the state at the base of the Wallowa Mountains. The Anthony Lakes Ski Resort is the only ski game in town. Oregon’s highest terrain accessible by lift is there, and Anthony Lakes sends chairs rattling up there all winter. Money for schools in the area is hard to come by and occasional budget cuts shortens the school week to just four days. When that happens the Ski for the Health of It programs steps in and offers free lifts and gear for the school kids to take advantage of their extra day of freedom and to teach kids more accustomed to bearing the cold while pitching hay and feeding cattle to have fun in it too.
