Jim Whittaker was the first American to summit Everest. As such, he was something of an adventure celebrity in the 1960s. In 1965, Whittaker was charged with leading Bobby Kennedy on a first ascent of Mount Kennedy, an imposing and remote Yukon peak named for John F. Kennedy. 50 years later, the sons of those on the 1965 climb returned to the mountain to retrace their father’s steps. A documentary about the climb, Return to Mount Kennedy, was released last year and is currently on a screening tour, with REI showing the film at several of their stores in the coming weeks. Makes sense, Whittaker is a former REI executive. The film will be available for wide release sometime this fall.
