A dark, mysterious jungle in Nepal. The biggest honeybees on the planet. A psychotropic honey. Death-defying cliff climbing. This is the story of Mauli Dhan, a man who harvests “mad honey” that sells on black markets for its hallucinogenic punch. Climbing rope ladders and shuffling along granite ledges with tiny footholds sometimes hundreds of feet above the forest floor, the harvest is not for the feint of heart. It’s not for Dhan either, who does it reluctantly, as you’d imagine. He’s stung dozens of times per harvest and each time he scales the ropes he risks a fatal fall. But he needs the money. As this video shows, he’s nearing the end of his path as a honey hunter and with no obvious successor who wants to take over, he may very well be the last.
