Jack English and his wife Mary were hunting with their son in an isolated stretch of Big Sur, California, forest one day in 1976 when they learned from a group hikers that the land they were hunting on was being put up for sale. The English family had been frequenting the Ventana Wilderness area for decades and they decided they’d be the ones to purchase the land. They did, and Jack built a small cabin on the property by hand. Years later, Mary passed, but before she did, she told Jack he should live full-time on the property he loved so much. For the next several decades, he did just that, living off-grid, carving violing bows, watching the pines wave.
