It’s nearly Fat Bear Week—that’s the first week of October—but the cameras pointed at Katmai National Park’s Brooks River are on and running and getting some terrific bear footage. The “contest” to pick which bear gains the most weight as they prepare for hibernation kicks off on October 3 and the griz are nearly at their gluttonous peaks right about now. Last year, Bear 409, a female known as “Beadnose,” was voted fattest bear. Watching the cams now is to see the biggest bears force others out of the choicest fishing spots on the river, as salmon leap repeatedly up the short falls. Clearly, the bears have had no shortage of fish so far. They’re huge. The cam is below, may as well pull up a chair.
