A handful of lighthouses in the Florida Keys are there for the taking for any non-profits or educational organizations that want to take over ownership. The price: Nada. Free. Gratis. Applications are being taken by the US Coast Guard, eager to rid themselves of the burden and expense of structures no longer logistical useful in an era of GPS, though still beautiful and historically interesting. Granted, if your organization is selected to take the keys, you will be responsible for maintenance and keeping the lighthouse preserved and available to the public for tours. Also, you have to prove financial ability to keep the lighthouse standing. If any of the four lighthouses available to be given away (like Alligator Reef Station, above) cannot find a home with a non-profit group, they will be auctioned off to the public. Check ’em out here.
