By a Senate vote of 56-41, David Bernhardt, who’d been serving in an interim role for months, has been confirmed as the 53rd Interior Department Secretary. He’d been in control of the Interior since Ryan Zinke left the post in January, and it’s been reported Bernhardt had been in a position of outsized authority as Interior’s Deputy Secretary even while Zinke was the nominal head. The former oil and gas lobbyist has already raised the ire of conservationists in the few months he’s led the Interior, after removing protections for threatened wildlife and blocking reports of damaging pesticide use before they were made public. He’s expected to be sworn in within days. Photo: CC
