Aasmund Kleiv was a master ski maker from the Telemark region of Norway. In this soothing—nearly therapeutically so—short film made in 1975, Kleiv builds a set of wooden, free-heeled cross country skis by hand, from scratch, the way it had been done a century before. To watch Kleiv’s hands expertly wield an ax to carve the skis is to see somebody completely and totally in tune with their craft.
