The Wilmots are a surfing dynasty in Jamaica. Well, as close as you can get to such a thing in a country not known for its surf. Billy Wilmot is the island’s best-known surfer, sort of the godfather of Jamaican surfing. His sons Icah and Ivah have made names for themselves in the international surf world too, but it’s Billy’s daughter Imani who stars in this doc about the women’s surf scene in Jamaica. Imani started “Surf Girls Jamaica” a club that gives women a place to meet, to surf, to establish a community in a Kingston area that can be a difficult place to live. Paddling into the sea, riding a wave, gathering the courage to learn something new—surfing brings all of that.
