The coldest temperature and most powerful winds in the UK have been recorded in the Scottish Cairngorms, a mountain range smack in the middle of the Highlands. The climate is downright tundra-like: freezing, wind-whipped, and mostly treeless. The weather is as unpredictable as it gets. In fact, the Gaelic name of Cairngorm can translate as green hills, blue hills, or red hills, confusingly, which may be a nod to the ever-shifting weather. So, the perfect place to strap gear to a bike and hit the muddy trails. In this short, the moody Highlands are well-represented and just when you think it looks too cold and dark to be enjoyable, they hit a cozy, fire-warmed pub and it all makes sense.
