The Grand Canyon has been hogging the spotlight lately, what with turning 100 and all, but let’s give other public lands celebrating birthdays their due—South Dakota’s Black Hills National Forest turned 122 last Friday. The crew from More Than Just Parks has been branching out into making short films about national forests, too, and they’ve just dropped one on the Black Hills. This “little” corner of American has 1.2 million acres,13,000 acres of wilderness, 1,300 miles of streams, 450 miles of hiking trails, and two national scenic byways. Amen, brothers and sisters.
Beautiful video! Too bad they didn’t show a single bicyclist.. Road or mountain. Or even somebody riding their “hog” through the hills. Or Mt. Rushmore, Crazyhorse, etc. Seemed to be a hunting & fishing promo video – not that there’s anything wrong with that. If you want to ride some of the Black Hills best single track trails, check out trips by these guys: https://westernspirit.com/ and their trip in the Black Hills https://westernspirit.com/trips/black-hills-of-south-dakota-mountain-bike-tour/
Except for one fish and one deer the wildlife that are one of the greatest joys of the forest are ignored.
Spent some time in Custer State Park (SD) in September a few years back. Gorgeous area, awash in wildlife. Saw my first and only mountain goat there! Would love to go back for another visit.
The Black Hills is my favorite place to be, so my wife and I moved here at the end of last year. It’s absolutely, 100%, worth visiting. No matter what outdoor recreation strikes your fancy, you’ll enjoy your stay.
I’ve been blessed to live not too far away from there. Close enough that my wife and I took our girls out there virtually every summer for our family vacation. A wonderful place to be!
Very moving & convincing video. Bravo! I showed it to my wife and she loved it also. However, she pointed out that there was not a single woman in the video. Huge marketing & production mistake. Not sure you’re going to lure many families there… a crucial part of our shared conservation effort.
They didn’t show anyone who looks like me or does the outdoor recreational activities that I enjoy so therefore this video that showcases the natural beauty of the Black Hills National Forest is terrible.
Some of these comments are a hoot.
Stunning! I wish the general public could just appreciate simple beauty and be thankful that many people, human beings just like the rest of us, put so much time and effort into creating this gorgeous video for us to enjoy. I think it is awesome. Thank you.
A beautiful video, I was a boy living in Lead in the early 60’s…loved roaming the woods fishing and hunting.
While I like some of the drone footage I get bored when it’s overdone and over relied on, it’s not the end all!
That said i’m Happy that the hills are getting exposure.
