Yikes. Last week it was The Enthusiast Network, which owns Bike, Powder, and Surfer magazines, among others, laying off 50 percent of it staff. This week, the company that owns Performance Bicycles, the country’s largest bike chain, announced that all physical stores will be closed by March 2. Additionally, 95 employees at Advanced Sports Enterprises, Performance’s parent company, in North Carolina lost their jobs. ASE filed bankruptcy last year and hopes that Performance might be saved were dashed when negotiations with a European brand fell apart. New owner of Performance trademarks, Amain.com, said it will continue Performance online retail operation, as well as sister brand Nashbar’s.
