Sitting is the new smoking, or so the saying goes, which makes standing at your desk clean living, right? Well, how does it compare to a treadmill or cycling work station? Nowhere near as good for your health. A new meta-study, published today in Occupational & Environmental Medicine, looked at data from 12 other studies and found that all three approaches were better than sitting, but cycling and walking desks burned more calories and lowered blood pressure more than standing. The only problem—which is no surprise, really—is that “the upper body effort needed to stabilize gait and posture on a treadmill workstation might affect the fine motor skills needed for keyboarding,” said the report. Um, duh? Maybe the solution is simply to work less and move more. Just a thought.
