When I was in Africa and saw a rhino, the last thing I thought about doing was rubbing its belly. Climbing on bareback and herding giraffes, yes. Belly rubs, no.
But wildlife filmmaker Garth De Bruno Austin has spent years shooting footage of wildlife in South Africa and this one female rhino has become comfortable with his presence—really comfortable, as the up close and personal visit was her idea.
“Do NOT try and do this with a truly wild rhino as it may end up with you being dead!,” Austin says. “FYI, I did not approach this animal, it was completely her decision to let me come into her personal space and touch her.”
