America could do no better than to have Big Jim Whittaker as its first citizen to top Mt. Everest. Genial, without pretense, funny and at times ribald, he is above all other things a lover of nature and testing one’s self there. This sweet, delightful short film features Whittaker talking about the elements of finding yourself and your meaning outdoors – its inspiration comes subtly, but powerfully, and you might very well watch it more than once.

My husband Jeff Darnall passed away June 9th, 1999. 14 years ago. Even though he died at age 35 he lived a great life. Steve Casimiro who wrote this article knew Jeff very well as he was his boss at Surfer Publications. Steve took Jeff on many adventures snowboarding. He taught Jeff how to be an incredibly hard worker and Graphic Designer for Bike Magazine, SnowBoarder Magazine and Powder Magazine. Jeff lived life outdoors and knew the value of enjoying it. His 3 children will always have their Dad’s life as a footprint and clue to truly LIVING life with Joy, Adventure and Greatness. Waiting to live a full life should never be an option. I LOVE this article !! Thanks Steve !

Even though it’s been a decade and a half, his friends still miss him, Leslie. Joni and I talk about him all the time, how he lived and loved with such an open heart, positive attitude, and kindness to others. Even when we dragged him on his first big backcountry overnight and he post-holed for hours in breakable crust, he never complained. Jeff was a rare man who made the most of his time and touched the people around him in a lasting way.

Thanks Steve !!! I’ll be passing your comment on to Graftan and Morgan as they will appreciate the opportunity to hear from someone who played a part in living the adventurous life with their dad. Keep living the cool and creative life you lead!!!!!

Wonderful; toward the end he says exactly how I feel when I’m immersed in the natural world. It’s nice to be reminded of that connection.

That says a lot in less than 4 minutes. I’ve got a lot of respect for him.
It certainly is a kick in the butt to get out there and screw up.
