While parts of the Sierra Nevada at certain times of the year are crawling with people, in others and at others it’s easy to disappear into solitude and winter perfection. It’s shocking, actually, that in a state as populous as California, in mountains that have been proclaimed for more than a century, you can find yourself alone in what feels like primal wilderness, no sign of man except for an occasional contrail overhead and the tracks you make in the snow.
