Oh, how I miss Documerica. From 1972 to 1977, the Environmental Protection Agency sent 70 top photographers around the United States to document issues related to “environment concern.” How skiing at Aspen Highlands bears directly on issues of pollution and environmental integrity aren’t quite clear, but, nevertheless, the archives of Documerica are filled with an amazing snapshot of this country on the edge of major environmental cleanup. Especially in light of this week’s poll, which asks if you had a time machine which sport and decade you’d return to, we’ll take 1970s Aspen.

It is quite obvious by the empty two seater chairs that skiing in Aspen was some kind of ‘hippie, fringe thing’ which is why this is known as the “Golden Age of Skiing.” Yep, no argument from me on this one.

Stem Christy!! When you convince them to revive the program, I’d love a spot. Cas, you’re still the king. Love this.

I think that was the upper-most life at AH at the time. I ski-bummed Aspen in 1967, worked at the Jerome and the Village Pantry, and had a staff pass at AH. That upper lift tempted few skiers at the time. I usually rode the chair alone and few skiers were to be seen. As I recall, it didn’t offer much choice of in-bound terrain.
