Moments of Regret: Rampage Canyon Gap to Flat OTB

Cam Zink was killing it at the Red Bull Rampage last weekend…until he wasn’t. Threading a typically rusty line outside Virgin, Utah, Zink was dialed until he hit the Rampage Canyon gap, which he overshot in a big way. He tossed his bike and took the 80-footer on his feet. Feet that have been through more than a little trauma. But, against seemingly all odds, Zink wasn’t seriously hurt.

“I was scared for my life and can’t believe my legs and knees are intact,” he wrote. “With five knee surgeries, two broken feet, and a having a rod in my tibia prior to this plane crash I guess I’m doin’ okay if this 80-foot bail to flat only bruised my heels.”

Um, ya think?

The video above was captured via Zink’s Contour POV camera. Watch it first. Then watch the spectator angle below to see how really freaking gnarly it was — and what a miracle it was that he stood up and walked away.

You know, I get it. Super fun as hell stunt, great to talk about it with your buddies and one major adrenaline rush. But, is it worth the risk?

Even if he lands it, is it worth whatever amount of money he’ll earn? I’m not sure. Just look at that jump. It’s incredible. Poor bastard.

I completely admire these guys for seeking a way to live their passions and finding a way to make money at the same time, but is the industry pushing it beyond what’s reasonable? In order to make himself marketable, Zink had to endure this crash and apparently, several others.

In the end, it’s his choice and I’m sure he’s living by his own standards. Awesome. But seriously …

Am I off base here?

Or to put it another way: keep trying to find your limits and sooner or later you will find them.

At some point you do ask yourself is it worth it, I did last fall after a bad crash. Doesn’t mean you don’t keep riding, just means you live to ride another day, and that’s okay, life is long.
