Poll: Coffee or Beer?

As I found out on a car camping trip through the Utah desert last summer, my father in law and I are equally obsessive. One of the main differences in our obsessions, though, is the time of day when they start. Mine begins the second I wake up and tails off in late afternoon. His fires up about the time mine diminishes and ceases when he falls asleep.

I’m coffee, he’s beer. Equal and opposite. Dark and light. Hot and cold. Two beverages that must take their place among mankind’s greatest accomplishments, a mark of inspiration in the way we teased energy and new perspectives from nature’s gifts. And two beverages that are as entwined in the outdoor experience as sweat and stoke and joyful suffering. It might be that the passion and motivation that drive you to, say, climb a mountain, are the same character traits that lead us to gleefully embrace coffee and beer, or it might be that we need the bump of caffeine to get us going up the hill and the salve of alcohol to ease the aches when we get down, or it might be that we’re simply obsessive and beer, coffee, and the outdoors are where our tiddlywinks landed.

Now, as to our query today, it is deliberately broad, but underlying “Coffee or Beer?” are such specifics are superiority, taste, effect on the body, integration with the outdoor experience, and, ultimately, the inability to go without. Indeed, the question at the heart of the matter, I think, is if you had to pick one and only one to drink for the rest of your life, which would it be?

A few years ago I would’ve voted coffee all the way but since I had to cut out caffeine I have moved my obsession over to beer. Drinking one now after a long ride on an abnormally hot Patriots Day.

Tough choice.

The last day I went without coffee was in May of 2010, hiking the WCT. Worst. Headache. Ever.

I drink beer almost daily, but it doesn’t give me headaches if I miss a day.

So I guess coffee. But I’d be pretty choked to make the decision.

Reply

sammie April 16, 2012 at 13:11

Crap! that is the HARDEST poll EVER!
Of course you have to start the day off with a hot cup of coffee – freshly roasted on the stove top and finely ground for that perfect cup.
But you HAVE to end the day with a beer! that perfect brew from my favorite pub just around the corner from my house. so I choose BOTH!

Reply

Chris K April 16, 2012 at 13:11

This is, like, an impossible choice. The only way I could come to a conclusion is that I *always* take coffee on my adventures, and almost never bring beer. The beer at the end is a wonderful reward, but the coffee is part of the journey.

Now, if you’d thrown whiskey into the mix, I’d be totally unable to choose.

Reply

Mike April 16, 2012 at 13:12

Coffee!

Reply

Sabrina April 16, 2012 at 13:13

Coffee! Because you can drink/eat it with ice cream and ice cream goes well with liquor. Beer, not so much.

Honestly I wish I could pick both because I am equally a fan of coffee AND beer. Coffee starts my day and beer ends it so it’s a toss up. I would however I like to point out that I was first introduced to coffee when I was a kid by my Italian grandfather. He would let me take sips of his espresso while he was shooting the breeze with his fellow Italian fishermen buddies. So, if I had to give a slight edge it would be coffee just for my nostalgia and to my heritage.

Beer. I start my caffeine fix with diet coke, followed by about a gallon or so of water throughout the day and finally capping it off with some tasty home brew or new craft beer I haven’t tried. To me coffee tastes like burnt tree bark. I’ve even given coffee the benefit of the doubt by trying it in several countries around the world, trying different types of beans, and even in different forms – it still tastes like burnt tree bark. Although, I’ve never eaten burnt tree bark, that’s just the taste image it gives me. Ironically though, I enjoy bitter flavored beer.
