The Behind the Scenes of a Killer Street-Skiing Video

This video outtake of J.P. Auclair street skiing, from Sherpa Studios’ new All.I.Can documentary, hit a few weeks ago and instantly went viral. It’s worthy, for sure, but really what it prompted, beyond pure stoke, were more questions. Starting with: Is Swix P-Tex a sponsor??

Seriously, what director/cinematographer Dave Mossop told BroBomb Magazine is that the segment was entirely thought up by Auclair, who said that as a kid…”he would look out the car window in the little B.C. town where he grew up and visualize a skier hitting every little patch of snow and jibbing everything possible.” The video was shot near Nelson, in the town of Trail, which has lots of blight, including smelter towers that only add to the grubby, nowhere-to-ski-but-the-streets vibe.

Mossop said he and Auclair shot for 14 days straight and edited every night: “There was just the two of us (with occasional help from kids walking home from school). I’ve never shoveled so many poo particles in my life.” Mossop also said they’d pray for rain and clouds, so that consistent gray/gritty tone would be maintained.

If the sun came out the shooting had to stop. Most of the shooting takes place through peoples’ backyards, who were largely welcoming. And, pretty remarkably when you see some of the single-take extremes, there was very little carnage, according to Mossop: “I was looking in the viewfinder while skiing beside him once, and cut him off pretty badly — he sacrificed himself and smoked a tree. Very gentlemanly! He snapped the tip of his ski but had to keep riding them; you can see it flopping around on the landing of the roof-360 drop, if you look closely.”

Via Brobomb; The 90-minute All.I.Can is a $3.99 rental in iTunes; Hat tip to Johnathon Allen.

I’ve watched this clip probably 15 times now. All.I.Can is an amazing movie but this is one of my favorite segments. Urban ski movie segments have forever been changed.

Just one of the best vids I have seen in a LONG time. Got this link through a Fly Fishing site.
Congrats!
