Reporting from Outdoor Retailer Summer Market, Salt Lake City, Utah ——
SNOW PEAK’S SNOWMINER HEADLAMP, new for spring 2012, is a great example of the brand’s nod to whimsy and usability. Maybe it’s the Japanese obsession with all things cute, but after the seeing the Snow Peak LED lantern that flickered like a candle and turned off when you blew on it, it’s no surprise that Snow Peak is introducing a bright technical lamp that also sports a bit of lifestyle.
The SnowMiner ($50) rocks up to 60 lumens — plenty to hike with, but not enough to spot gangbangers from the air in an LA cop chopper —— and quickly converts from a headlamp to a hanging lantern simply by removing the lens. The result is a soft 180-degree glow perfect for tent-bound reading or games of Slap.
The headlamp squeezes the three AAA batteries for 140 hours on low and 55 hours on high, and it is water resistant. Weight it 87 grams/2.9 ounces.
