Last month, rad man Chuck Patterson dropped into Maui’s famed Jaws big wave break on a pair of wave skis. It was a coming-out moment for the relatively new devices, which were invented or perhaps dramatically improved by Jason Starr a few years ago (short history here). Most of the wave skiing has been conducted in smaller surf, and the devices have not always held up, but with new sticks and more time on them, Patterson did Jaws right.
The response to wave skiing has been mixed. A little over a year ago, skiers Mike Douglas and Cody Townsend put together some sessions in Hawaii that garnered both ridicule and respect. It’s as if people don’t know what to make of it…they want to be open minded, they’re eager for the next cool thing, but they’re not convinced this is it.
Wave skiing is still a novelty practiced by a tiny handful of folks, but Chuck’s Jaws session shows that the gear and technique can hang. The question is, will it?

I think it’s bad ass, if you can do it then why not? Innovation is what makes adventure sports like this so great.

I think this has potential to be next level, especially in the minds and hearts of the winter outdoor sports enthusiasts, but it will be an extremely tough sell in the surf/beach culture. There is already backlash to SUP boarding and I can’t imagine how backlash with ski surfing might play out in SoCal.
A lot of the drive in the surf culture is simply related to what is cool and ski surfing will need to prove its worth and earn a ton of cool points before it can really take off.
It is so stupid but cool. I am conflicted.
The print I would like it Summit, Mt. Everest by Jimmy Chin
What’s not to like? With some soft boots and practice, this could be cool. But it’ll always be a tow-in sport. As to backlashes against stand-up boarding, that’s mostly related to novice stand-up borders wallowing around, crossing the run-out zones of known surf breaks and creating a hazard.
But for save skiing I’d bag the poles, like Patterson was using in the Jaws videos. Can’t see the utility there at all.
Looks sweet and the world needs new sick adventures…I vote yes!! Mfangano Island, Kenya!
so cool I vote yes! Just a suggestion, how about winning a pair of surf skis?
why not?! a combination of 2 of the best sports.
