The Weekend Cabin

Weekend Cabin isn’t necessarily about the weekend, or cabins. It’s about the longing for a sense of place, for shelter set in a landscape…for something that speaks to refuge and distance from the everyday. Nostalgic and wistful, it’s about how people create structure in ways to consider the earth and sky and their place in them. It’s not concerned with ownership or real estate, but what people build to fulfill their dreams of escape. The very time-shortened notion of “weekend” reminds that it’s a temporary respite.

Weekend Cabin is a new feature to Adventure Journal, appearing on Fridays, and this first one kicks off with a collection of images gathered from the nooks and crannies of Tumblr — classic weekend cabins, set in or near the woods, probably slightly musty, and most definitely stocked with well-used games of Yahtzee and jigsaw puzzles with a few pieces missing. There are Daddy Longlegs in the woodbin, an old white fridge with rounded edges and a frost-filled freezer, footlong matches by the fireplace, and a creek or lake nearby for cold mountain swimmin’. The air is slightly heady when you first arrive on Friday night, floors creak when you walk on them, and come Monday all you can think about is nothing but getting back.

Excellent, there is definitely the need for a source of mountain/outdoor/adventure style and design living and inspiration.

We have cottages on a gorgeous lake in Northern Michigan and this article duplicates so perfectly what they are about.

I would love to spend all of my weekends at these cabins. They look like the perfect place to relax and be away from it all.

Perfectly describes our Adirondack cabin. Very remote wilderness with canoe access only, private property surrounded on all sides by forest preserve, a dream realized for over 50 years. All trees cut on the property to construct a 2 story cabin which it took us 3 years to build. Made my life worth living, despite the huge labor involved. We have another, even more remote, in the wilderness of Quebec complete with with wolves and Moose. How fortunate we are!

Great pics sharing the ideas of “getting away” and the piece it can bring us. I like to go on wilderness hikes to take in the beauty in life and get some great exercise in the process. I’d like to hear what kind of fitness secrets others have that combine the beauty of the great outdoors and your weekend cabin adventures?

The cabins look great i hope someday to live in a cabin in the woods being away from the everyday hassels of the subburbs would be great.

I have been a carpenter my whole life, and at 52yrs young I am ready to build a self sufficiant cabin for my wife and I to enjoy. Something with large timbers and a white oak shake roof. A wood stove, and a wood cook stove, a nice portch, enough trees for some shade, and maybe a creek, or a pound, on enough land to make it feel remote.I can close my eyes and see it, somewhere in southeast Missouri where my ancestors started out in the early 1800s. Yes, this will be my next project, and it will be fun!!!

Loving the ‘getting away from it all’ style of this. Its got the same feel as the tours we do at monobo – very exciting!

The fourth picture down is right near my house located on long pond in Acadia National Park. Possible one of the best places to go swimming on a sunny day.
