If you’re paying attention, you might have noticed something slightly different about this website in the last day or so. Effective October 18, The Adventure Life became Adventure Journal. If you should choose to heckle from the bleachers, from this point forward our heads will only snap and swivel when you holler, “Hey, Journal, that the best you got?” Using “Life” is going to get you nowhere.
Other than the name change, the site will continue with the same design, original content, voice, and perspective. It’s a website, so of course it will evolve, adapt, and grow, but the mission to inspire you guys to live adventurously outdoors remains its reason for being.
The obvious question on the new name is, “Why?” and as is typical in such matters, there are a number of reasons, but the main one is that Adventure Journal better articulates the scope, mission, and ambition of where this website is going. When I first started it as a blog in 2008, an ambiguous name felt right, but today, as a commercial online magazine with a broad readership base, growing traffic, and advertising support from the biggest names in the outdoor space, a specific, tangible, and descriptive moniker is more appropriate. Hopefully, when someone hears “Adventure Journal” they’ll understand it without too much further explanation.
The first example of the new and growing Adventure Journal is the debut of our print store. It’s a big enough deal that it deserves its own post, which will come later today, but the short version is that we’re offering a stunning collection of images from some of the world’s top outdoor photographers. I think it’s okay to say “stunning” and not have it be hype, because these photographs are truly extraordinary and I’m humbled to have them connected to our efforts here. Keep an eye out for the post, and take a peek at the store by clicking on “Print Store” in navigation bar at the top of the page.
There have been a couple other developments, too. The name change required a new Facebook fan page, which I’ve sweetened with galleries from our contributing photographers and also includes a sample of our weekly newsletter. The new Facebook page is here: LINK
We’ve also added a new newsletter called InTransit, which covers vehicles, rigs, and road trips and is written by mountain bike stud and auto industry vet Michael Frank. If you haven’t seen the newsletter, you really should check it out, and I’m not just sayin’. We fill it with original content each week…give it a try. LINK
We’re also going to be launching a series of regular giveaways, including awarding framed images from the print store, but you’ll have to be a Facebook fan, newsletter subscriber, and Twitter follower to win. There’s no time like the present to get on board.
Transferring to a new domain and updating pages has been a ton of work, and I’m sure there are glitches, bugs, and gremlins that we’ve overlooked. Very cool. I think i still like the old name better, but it’s great to hear that the site continues to expand and grow. And the photos in the print store are indeed “stunning.”
One thing to note: it appears that RSS feeds from the old domain do not work with the new (at least in Google Reader) so it might be worth letting people know that they need to re-subscribe.
