You gotta figure the ocean critters are getting tired of Discovery and Animal Planet making all this bank off their exploits when all they get in return is some chum or a handful of bait fish. Well, one decided if you can beat ‘em, join ‘em: On a recent night dive off Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, to shoot footage for the TV show “Into the Drink”, Travis Matteson had his $10,000 Canon 5D Mark II rig snatched from his hands by a passing manta ray. The best guess is that the ray was planning to grab some footie for next year’s shark week and make some mint of its own selling the shots, but the Canon slipped off its wing eight minutes into its escape. The camera was running at the time and when it was recovered and the ray’s footage reviewed, it was revealed to be better than 90 percent of what’s on YouTube.
